GFA Taca Goa U-20 League
Sporting Clube de Goa 2 (Kiran Choukashi ’38, Mauvin Borges ‘45+1)
Churchill Brothers Sports Club 1 (Suraj Singh ’77)
Sporting Clube de Goa overpowered Churchill Brothers Sports Club 2-1 in Gfa’s Taca Goa U-20 League at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Thursday. Sporting Goa led 2-0 at the interval.
The Flaming Oranje was robust in the defence, creative in midfield and clinical in front of goal which gave them a slight advantage over Churchill Brothers who also put up a determined display until the final whistle.
Sporting Goa took a deserved lead seven minutes before the breather when a Churchill defender half cleared the ball to the edge of the box, which found the boot off Kiran Choukashi who used his technical expertise to spectacularly volley the ball into the back of the net.
Deep into injury time of the first half, Sporting Goa doubled their lead when striker Mauvin Borges showed glimpses off his immaculate footwork as he sped away and shot which proved too hot to handle for the Churchill custodian.
After the lemon break, Churchill made a couple of changes to the line-up to try and alter the destiny of the game, but Sporting Goa did not run for cover and instead tried to find further ways to break down their opponents.
In the closing stages, Churchill got a lifeline when Suraj Singh blasted home from a Kamaldeep Singh flag kick, which set up an exciting end to the proceedings.
“It is always nice to start the campaign with a win. I am pleased with the attitude of the squad and we will look to build on this performance,” remarked Sporting Goa Coach Norbert Gonsalves.
“I felt my boys played very well. We missed a couple of good chances at the end which could have given us a draw but it was not to be, although it was an entertaining game from both sides,” stated Churchill Brothers Coach Alfred Fernandes.
