Dempo Sports Club 2 (Vineet Bugde ‘6 & ’83)
Vineet Bugde netted a brace with a goal in each half as Dempo Sports Club narrowly overcame Sporting Clube de Goa 2-1 in Gfa’s Taca Goa U-20 League at Don Bosco ground, Panjim on Wednesday. Dempo led 1-0 at the lemon break.
Dempo raced into the lead after just six minutes when Vineet turned gracefully in the box and fired past the opposition goalkeeper.
Sporting Goa was eager to get back into the game and played with real gusto. There were majestic long passes essayed forward from the defence and elegant through balls given in the midfield as they displayed their spatial awareness.
There was still a lot of work for the Flaming Oranje to be done as Dempo did not park the bus, but after scoring they expended just enough energy moving forward to keep their noses ahead at the breather.
Changing over the tempo of the game was turned down a couple of notches, but Sporting Goa still showed urgency. Their patience was finally rewarded when the Sporting Goa captain Souvik Das controlled a telling pass and buried the ball into the back of the net.
In the closing stages, Sporting Goa had a delightful opportunity to grab the winner when Mauvin Borges raided the box and cut the ball across the face of goal, but Joel Fernandes’ shot was marvelously instinctively saved by the Dempo custodian Alison Fernandes.
Dempo breathed a sigh of relief and at the same time started to find openings in the Sporting Goa defence as they marauded forward. Quick thinking found Dempo’s Vineet in a yard of space and he cleverly lifted the ball over the Sporting Goa goalkeeper seven minutes from time to grab the winner.
