Sporting Clube de Goa defender Miguel Garcia scooped the SCG Player’s player of the year award while Mauvin Borges received the SCG Player’s Young Player of the year Award, at the Club House in Panjim, recently.

The SCG Awards were voted for by the senior squad of Sporting Clube de Goa to reward and recognise the outstanding contribution made by their own team mates.

Portuguese defender Miguel beat off stiff competition from midfielder Pratesh Shirodkar, while third place went to right back Clemente Joseph.

Mauvin was the winner of the U-23 award, just ahead of goalkeeper Ravi Kumar and India International defender Sandesh Jhinghan who finished third.

Mauvin who at the age of 18 became the youngest player to have donned the famous Flaming Oranje jersey for Sporting Goa in the I-League has just completed his second full season with the club.

“Being voted for by my team mates makes it extra special. I want to thank the President Mr Peter Vaz for giving me the platform to perform,” Stated Mauvin

Miguel who joined from North East United has previously represented Sporting Clube de Portugal and Sporting Braga and has played in two UEFA Europa League finals.

“The club roped in some very talented players this season and there were others who could have walked away with the honour, so it is a privilege to have won. This award is dedicated to all my team mates who battled till the final whistle,” remarked Miguel.

This is the third successive year that Sporting Goa has held the prestigious Awards. Pratesh Shirodker won the inaugural SCG Player’s player of the year award in 2013, while last year Spanish defender Gonzalo Hinojal took home the prize.

In 2013, Stephene Barreto won the Player’s young player of the year and last season defender Keenan Almeida picked up the title.

Odafa Signs for Sporting Clube de Goa

The season has barely got over and Sporting Clube de Goa have already made an exciting splash into the transfer market with the acquisition  of Nigerian talisman Odafa Okolie who re-signed for the Flaming Oranje, at the club headquarters in Panjim on Thursday.

The 29 year -old had initially joined Sporting Goa mid-way through the season from Churchill Brothers. After impressing with eight goals in nine appearances which helped the club stay afloat they decided to extend his contract for next season.

“I would like to thank God, my wife and family, the SCG President, coaching staff, players and Flaming Oranje fans for supporting me,” stated Odafa.

Sporting Goa strongly believe that Odafa can contribute in propelling the club to challenge for the title next year.

“We have begun a partnership with one of the all-time leading goal scorers in Indian Football. The dynamics of this synergy will play out on the field next season,” remarked the SCG President Peter Vaz.

“As Odafa motivates his team mates to challenge for honours, we are sure they will also assist him in reaching his past feats of finishing as the top goal scorer in the I-League. The stage is set for some exciting times ahead,” added Peter.

It is not only the quantity of the goals, but the sheer quality of the finishes which has encapsulated audiences in each venue he has played. The goals against Mohun Bagan and Pune were particularly classy, but Odafa feels all the goals were equally important as they were for the benefit of the team.

Besides his precious goal scoring, Odafa also lifted the team in his role as the club Captain and it is this vital leadership and experience that the club is also looking to harness to build for success.

“We are hoping to carry on the momentum of the performances the team produced in the later stages of the I-League which was spear headed by Odafa in the attack,” reasoned SCG CEO Victor Fernandes.
